The objective of this work is to understand the paths chosen by the director Luiz Fernando Carvalho in creating Capitu, a television adaptation of the novel Dom Casmurro, by Machado de Assis. We shall see that adapting a literary work for an audiovisual medium is an ongoing process, that requires, firstly, an interpretation of the text, and subsequently, choices and inevitable transformations, rendering any excessive concern with the matter of fidelity to the original work, impossible. Furthermore, through analysis of the artistic career of Luiz Fernando Carvalho and his relationship with literature, television and adaptations, it is possible to understand Project Quadrante, of which Capitu is part. However, before analyzing Capitu, we will examine the wealth of critique surrounding the original work of Machado de Assis, highlighting the many interpretations of Dom Casmurro and the concept of the image of the author which we has reached us today.
