[pt] Este trabalho tem por objetivo estudar de forma sistematizada o tema da memória na obra de Sigmund Freud. A memória é uma referência central em Freud, visto que o psiquismo é um aparelho de memória. Apresenta-se inicialmente um breve histórico das concepções sobre a memória na psicologia, neurologia, neurociência e psicologia cognitiva. Na teoria freudiana, expõe-se o papel das reminiscências, nos primórdios da teoria psicanalítica e da clínica da histeria. O conceito de traço mnêmico é extensamente examinado, visto manter um lugar de destaque ao longo da construção metapsicológica freudiana e portar efetivamente a originalidade da concepção freudiana de memória. O importante papel das memórias de infância, recobertas pela amnésia infantil, é examinado juntamente com a noção de lembranças encobridoras. Aborda-se o esquecimento, como uma das formas que assume o ato falho, distinguindo este esquecimento transitório, ligado ao recalque secundário, da amnésia infantil. A articulação entre memória e temporalidade é vista através do papel da memória filogenética e da noção de Nachträglich na teoria psicanalítica. As relações da memória com a repetição, que se apresenta como uma alternativa à recordação, são discutidas, assim como os desdobramentos desta descoberta com a introdução da noção de compulsão à repetição, e a criação de um dos conceitos mais controversos da teoria freudiana: a pulsão de morte.

[en] The aim of this dissertation is to study, in a systematic way, the theme of memory in the work of Sigmund Freud. Memory is a central reference in Freud s work inasmuch as psychism is a memory apparatus. A brief account of different conceptions of memory in psychology, neurology, neuroscience and cognitive psychology is presented. The role of reminiscences in Freud s first theory on hysteria is presented. The concept of mnemic trace is extensively analysed, as it plays a distinctive part throughout Freud s metapsychological construction and actually embodies the originality of Freud s conception of memory. Childhood memories, infantile amnesia and the notion of screen memory are examined. Forgetfulness is brought up as a case of parapraxis which, being temporary and due to secondary repression, is distinguished from infantile amnesia. The question of memory and temporality is approached both from the role of philogenetic memories and the notion of Nachträglich in psychoanalytic theory. The relationship between memory and repetition, being repetition an alternative to recollection, is examined, as well as how this discovery unfolded, resulting in the notion of compulsion to repeat and originating one of the most controversial concepts in Freud s theory: the death drive.
