[pt] O presente trabalho tem por objetivo interpretar o que significa ser e fazer jornalismo a partir da construção do caráter do jornalista. O caráter contempla a identificação dos valores comuns aos profissionais (ser) e também ações, comportamentos, atitudes que são compartilhadas e tidas como peculiares ao grupo (fazer). A construção do caráter do jornalista também busca estabelecer a relação destas identificações com o que o grupo define como teoria e prática. A pesquisa realizada através de entrevistas com jornalistas brasileiros e norte-americanos, além de outras fontes, busca criar um perfil ideal do jornalista através da definição dos atributos mais ou menos valorizados para a formação do caráter do grupo. Sob esta perspectiva, evidencia-se que este caráter se reconhece nos elementos selecionados enquanto práticos, em oposição àqueles entendidos como teóricos. Mas ainda que o caráter do jornalista esteja ancorado em uma ideia de prática, o trabalho também busca problematizar esta autoimagem e autonarrativa tendo em vista que os aspectos menos reivindicados também podem estar presentes na formação do caráter grupo, desconstruindo a separação entre teoria e prática na formação do caráter do jornalista.

[en] This study examines the meaning of being and doing journalism, based on the construction of the character of journalists. The character includes identifying values shared by journalists (being), as well as actions, behaviors and attitudes that are shared and taken as peculiar to the group (doing). It also intends to establish the relation between such identifications and what the group defines as theory and practice. Based on interviews with Brazilian and American journalists, as well as on other sources examined, it tries to form an ideal type using the definitions of the attributes most and least valued in building the journalist s character. According to such perspective, the study shows that the character recognizes the elements deemed practical, as opposed to those considered theoretical. Although the journalist s character is attached to an idea of practice, the study also questions the self-image and the self-narrative found in the group, taking into account that the elements least valued may also be found in the construction of the group s character, and the arguable separation between theory and practice in the formation of the journalist s character.
