This doctoral dissertation aims to analyze the relations between multiple agents of the funk movement, the business media and the state, which unfolded in the last decade of the twentieth century, encompassing two dimensions: negotiation and conflict. Examining newspaper s articles and documents produced by the funkeiros, by state institutions and representatives of different public authorities, we seek to discuss the strategies developed by the funkeiros to inscribe their discourses and their worldviews in the mainstream media, as well as the reactions of different sectors of the state to the forms of mobilization and cultural expression guided by the funkeiros. These relations, far from composing a uniform and linear trajectory, unveil an intricate scenario of cultural flows, class interests, aesthetic forms, negotiation channels and repressive practices through which it is possible to identify the negotiation and confrontation movements adopted by the listed characters and to understand how these dynamics impacted the production of funk and the formats of the balls. At the same time, we intend to evaluate how this cultural manifestation allows one to glimpse the social tensions and movements of symbolic exchanges that occurred in a context of redemocratization and consolidation of neoliberalism.
