Abstract:
This work contrasts birthday celebrations in german and brazilian societies, examining them as a cultural trait in light of the theories of intercultural study. Some indicators provided by these studies will be examined, for instance: indulgence vs. restraint; collectivism vs. individualism; avoidance of uncertainties. After analyzing the data collected in letters written by one family, during the stay in Germany, to Brazilian relatives, considering the theoretical framework of interculturalism, we can see that a great difference between the two cultures lies in the collectivist character of Brazilian society, as opposed to individualism of German culture, but also that the indulgence parameter is clearly observed in the context of Brazilian society.
