Resumo:
This dissertation presents several techniques and technologies that are helpfull in the creation of distributed virtual environments with thousands of connected players. Explanations about the proper use of TCP and UDP are given. Some optimization techniques in the use of sockets are also given. Technologies that allow many sockets to be handled at once are explained, such as poll and kqueue from Unix and IO Completion Ports from Windows. Specific techniques for distributed virtual environments are presented. A tool that uses many of these techniques is proposed.
