Resumo: | |||||||||||||
The present study provides an analysis of John 4,5-42, the well-known text in which Jesus meets the Samaritan woman. It seeks to highlight the anagnorisis (recognition) of the Samaritan woman versus Jesus, that is, from the woman s
perspective, how the gradual process of recognizing Jesus’ identity occurred, how she came to perceive Jesus as He revealed Himself to her and her story. This narrative is part of the first section (Book of Signs: John 1–12) of the Fourth Gospel, one of the five texts of the Johannine corpus. Initially, this research presents some general data regarding the Fourth Gospel to situate the text, which is the third part of a Spousal Triptych in the Gospel of John (John 2,1-11; 3,29-31; 4,5-42). Next comes the Status Quaestionis, in which the contributions of various exegetes on John 4,5-42 are presented in chronological order, starting from the Patristic period. Then, the segmentation, translation, textual criticism notes, and translation notes are offered, utilizing some elements of the Historical-Critical Method and Semitic Biblical Rhetorical Analysis. Moreover, through elements of Narrative Analysis, as well as intertextual contacts (use of the Old Testament in the New Testament),
an analysis on John 4,5-42 is presented, highlighting the steps of the anagnorisis of
the Samaritan woman versus Jesus, in which she recognizes Him as: a Jewish man
(John 4,9b); someone who seems to be greater than Jacob (John 4,12a); a prophet
(John 4,19c); the Messiah, the Christ (John 4,25cd.26b.29b); and the Savior of the
world (John 4,42e). After some concluding considerations, at the end, the consulted
bibliography is also provided, which may be of great help for future research.
