This work objective is to establish a relation, starting
from the analysis of some of Lima Barreto s works, personal
writings, newspaper articles and chronicles, between those
characters - created by him - which are, in some way,
bound to madness, and the author s questioning view on the
new urban scene, then on development, considering two
fundamental points: (1) the author s utilitarian conception
of literature, by him defended, able to contribute to the
fighting against republican regime distortions, and (2) the
moment of consolidation of psychiatry, with prominence to
the author`s critics towards this science s discriminatory
character in early XXth Century.
