Resumo:
Starting from a destabilization of common understandings about what we call international, this dissertation proposes to interrogate distinctions between the spaces of international politics and people s lived spaces, with a specific focus on the lives of children in urban spaces. With this purpose, we opted for a strategy of thinking with cinema, attempting to effect simultaneous displacements and delineating paths that bring us closer to and apart from the possibility of glimpsing in the child this Other, which in the narratives of modernity is always inevitably destined to be tamed, brought in, or otherwise eliminated. In following the trajectories of child characters as aesthetic subjects, in the films Machuca (Andrés Wood, 2004) and Pixote: the law of the weakest (Hector Babenco, 1980), it is possible to challenge representations of space that naturalize hierarchical orderings, and at the same time, reveal disputes between multiple spatialities, temporalities and subjectivities. The proposed analyses emphasize aspects of contingency, and unfold in the light of a discussion of conceptions of the international and the urban through a brief intervention of Italo Calvino s The invisible cities, which provokes us to think about the relations between visibility and invisibility in the production of urban space, its materialities and representations. In this sense, the urban question is approached in terms of its dynamics of visibility and invisibility, which do not refer only to the social and spatial fragmentation expressed in built environments, but also to the very struggles for the production of meanings that interfere in urban materialities.
