Resumo:
Peace operations, although not specifically designed to interfere in the host-state s economy, present important impacts on the economic environment where they are deployed. This thesis aims to analyze specifically the effects on the formal economy, evaluating whether the presence of peacekeeping operations with multidimensional mandates affects local women s and men s participation in the host-state labor force. A fixed-effects panel data regression model is estimated for 74 countries where conflict has occurred from 1990 to 2012. The major findings are as follows. GDP per capita is highly significant and presents a positive relation to female and male labor force participation rates. The conflict variable is significant at a 95 percent level, but peace operations were not found to be significant for female labor force participation rates. The labor market in Islamic countries does not seem to be affected by the occurrence of conflict or the deployment of peace operations.
