Resumo:
In 2010, Brazil had about 5.3 million Brazilian youths (18-25 years old) who were not studying, not working and not looking for a job – almost 20 percent of young Brazilians. Despite the creation of job vacancies that year and advances in education levels, they were away, temporarily or not, from the main young socialization institutions: school and work. They are called the Neets (youth not in education, employment or training) – free translation of the term ni ni (ni estudian ni trabajan), used initially in Spanish – which, over the years, remains at a significant level in Brazil. This paper aims to think through the reasons that lead millions of people to the youth neet condition from three central themes: Family, School and Work. This work focuses on poor youth. The research methodology is qualitative and is based on the reports of 12 young people from poor areas of the state of Rio de Janeiro, especially slums.
