[pt] Esta tese tem como objeto de estudo os ensaios do crítico de arte Rodrigo Naves. A pesquisa se concentra em um recurso argumentativo específico, a saber: a indicação de elementos pressupostos pelos trabalhos artísticos em função dos as pectos formais e das técnicas empregadas. A hipótese principal é que as pressupo sições são bastante reveladoras de como o ensaísta articula o domínio estético e o social e determina a relevância dos artistas. A importância do recurso se deve ao fato de que, ao falar do que as obras pressupõem, o crítico trava um diálogo notável com algumas de suas referências mais importantes, embora nem sempre lembradas por sua ainda pequena fortuna crítica. Interessa demonstrar como as suposições de correm de um jeito peculiar de pensar a sociabilidade, o que aponta para a teoria de José Arthur Giannotti sobre a representação dos fenômenos sociais, e recaem num debate de ordem moral, que se liga à reflexão de Giulio Carlo Argan sobre a relação do fazer artístico com o fazer ético. O objetivo de estudar dimensões menos conhe cidas dos ensaios é reunir dados para um juízo apurado sobre a posição do autor no panorama da crítica brasileira e verificar em que medida a sua obra se diferencia de linhagens a que normalmente é vinculada.

[en] This thesis studies the essays by art critic Rodrigo Naves. The work focuses on an argumentative recourse: the frequent attempt to insinuate stuff presupposed by artistic works, by their formal aspects and the techniques used. The main hy pothesis is that the presuppositions reveal how the critic articulates the social and aesthetic domains, and the relevance of the artists studied. The importance of the recourse relies on the fact that these presuppositions unveil remarkable dialogues with some of his most important references, although not always remembered by his few commentators. This thesis tries to demonstrate how the presuppositions stem from a specific way of thinking about sociability, which points to José Arthur Giannotti s theory on the representation of social phenomena, and involve a debate on morals, which is linked with Giulio Carlo Argan’s theory on the relation between artistic creation and ethical creation. The objective of studying not so well-known items of the essays is to make an accurate judgment on the author’s position in the Brazilian criticism and to indicate how his essays are distinct from the lineages to which they are normally associated.
