[pt] Nicolau Maquiavel (1469-1527) compôs a História de Florença (1521 1525) seguindo uma importante tendência literária de sua época: imitar convenções estabelecidas por autoridades predecessoras. Por consequência da imitação de modelos prévios, em seu texto ele dialoga com uma diversidade de vozes antigas e renascentistas. O objetivo desta dissertação é investigar os diálogos polivocais estabelecidos nesta obra maquiaveliana, e, para tal, parto de dois princípios norteadores. Primeiramente, em vez de reduzir a relação do presente com o passado a apenas duas alternativas – continuidade ou ruptura –, atento-me aos diferentes graus de aproximação e afastamento do autor diante dos cânones tradicionais, considerando, assim, diversas possibilidades de mistura de repetição e singularidades. Em segundo lugar, devido à natureza multidisciplinar dos escritos humanistas, produzidos à luz de um programa pedagógico (studia humanitatis) no qual se estuda história junto de retórica, poesia, gramática e filosofia moral, busco mapear os contatos da historiografia com saberes vizinhos, particularmente a retórica e a poesia (épica ou dramática). Meu foco aqui reside no Proêmio geral que prefacia a narrativa e nos métodos retóricos operados pelos personagens históricos, com ênfase em estratégias verbais e imagéticas, incluindo os artifícios persuasivos da inventio (éthos, páthos e logos) e da elocutio (exemplificação e detalhamento).

[en] Niccolò Machiavelli (1469-1527) composed the History of Florence (15211525) following an important literary trend of his time: to imitate conventions established by preceding authorities. Because of this imitation, in his text he dialogues with a diversity of Ancient and Renaissance voices. The aim of this dissertation is to investigate the polyvocal dialogues established in this Machiavellian work, and, to this end, I start from two guiding principles. Firstly, instead of reducing the relation between the present and the past to just two alternatives – continuity or rupture –, I pay attention to the different degrees of approximation and distance in the author s relationship with traditional canons, thus considering various possibilities of mixing repetition and singularities. Secondly, due to the multidisciplinary nature of humanist writings, produced under a pedagogical program (studia humanitatis) in which history is studied alongside rhetoric, poetry, grammar and moral philosophy, I seek to map historiography s interactions with its neighboring fields of knowledge, particularly rhetoric and poetry (epic or dramatic). My focus here lies on the general Proem that prefaces the narrative and on the rhetorical methods employed by the historical characters, with an emphasis on verbal and visual strategies, including the persuasive devices of inventio (éthos, pathos, and logos) and elocutio (exemplification and detail).
