[pt] Este trabalho descreve e analisa a dinâmica de apropriação de elementos da cultura midiática japonesa por um movimento cultural organizado por jovens brasileiros. O objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar as práticas de jovens que se autodenominam otakus e que costumam se reunir em animencontros — eventos organizados por jovens aficcionados por mangás e animês —, freqüentados por milhares de crianças e jovens de todo o Brasil, onde praticam atividades específicas e constroem, coletivamente, uma forma própria de aproximação com essa produção cultural. O trabalho de observação e registro desses eventos foi realizado ao longo de 2006 e 2007, em quatro regiões brasileiras, nos moldes definidos para uma pesquisa qualitativa, de cunho etnográfico. Além das observações de campo, foram realizadas entrevistas estruturadas com 45 jovens freqüentadores desses eventos. Observou-se, entre outras coisas, o processo de socialização que se configura entre jovens e os modos de aquisição compartilhada de conhecimentos específicos relativos à cultura pop japonesa, assim como os modos de organização interna dos eventos e seus rituais. Foram tomados como referência teórico-metodológica trabalhos de autores ligados aos Estudos Culturais Latino-americanos como Renato Ortiz, Nestor García Canclini e Jesús Martin-Barbero.

[en] This thesis describes and analyzes the appropriation of elements of Japanese media culture by a cultural movement of Brazilian young people. Its goal has been to examine the practices of youth who call themselves otakus and meet in anime conventions (meetings organized by manga and anime devotees). The participants in these meetings – thousands of young people and children from all over Brazil – practice activities through which they collectively develop specific forms of appropriation of those foreign cultural productions. Following the principles of ethnographically-orientated qualitative research, we investigated anime conventions that took place in 2006 and 2007 in four Brazilian regions. In addition to field word, we carried out structured interviews with 45 young participants in the events. Focus of the observations were the socialization processes at work, the shared ways of assimilating knowledge specifically related to Japanese pop culture, as well as the internal organization of the meetings and their rituals. Theoretical and methodological references were taken from authors active in the Latin-American Cultural Studies area, such as Renato Ortiz, Nestor García Canclini and Jesús Martin-Barbero.
