Godofredo Iommi (1917-2001), argentine poet, with a group of architects and artists, refounded the School of Architecture and Design of the Pontifical Catholic University of Valparaíso, Chile, in 1952, based on the idea that there is a relationship between poetry and trades. This relationship has been implemented since the early days and is responsible for the artistic, intellectual and academic production of the members of this School.One of the direct consequences of the relationship between poetry and trades was the founding of the Open City in the early 1970s; A place where it has tried to reunite the life, the work and the study, by a community that is governed under poetic and artistic precepts.The hypothesis of this thesis is that Godofredo Iommi, as a poet, contributed decisively to the development of this School and the Open City, through the construction of metaphors, metaphorical processes or poetic metaphorical statements. It is about showing how some of these have served to construct an artistic and academic thinking; for the construction of concrete works both in the Open City and in the Travesías; and for the training of architects and designers along with other artistic, scientific, humanistic and technical disciplines, for more than sixty years. For this, the state of the art of metaphor is reviewed here.There is a documentary corpus in the José Vial Armstrong Historical Archive which consists of cassettes recorded with many of classes by Godofredo Iommi between 1978 and 1997. This thesis covers and is limited to the metaphors contained in these recordings. It is important to fully understand how these metaphorical statements were constructed, what their concrete effects were and what opportunity exists today so that this metaphorical work can continue to develop the relationship between poetry and trades in the School, but also enriches the global scope of all the university and many disciplines. In this sense the hypothesis considers that the metaphorical statements can be essential for the material construction of the world and knowledge. Through a relationship between work and study in different trades, these metaphorical statements not only become bridges and communicating channels through which disciplines feed on each other, but are themselves creators of disciplinary realities. Science, art and the humanities converge in the creation of new realities transformed by the metaphorical statements of the poetic word.
