This dissertation rehearses certain proposals concerning the construction of space focusing on social practices, cultural rites and artistic expressions within its many configurations. In this enterprise, the investigation faces the challenge of promoting, in an exemplary and punctual manner, the dialogue between proposals by anthropologists, geographers, sociologists, and philosophers, who have guided my own path in the search for adequate answers regarding the state of the art on the discussion about space. Following Marc Augé s elementary suggestion that we must learn how to look at space , the focus in centered on spaces constructed in real life as well as in the imaginary symbolic universe of the artistic realm as a producer of worlds. Such real-and-imagined places are investigated within the system of gift exchange, through performative acts in the visual arts, and in literary works that contain enigmatic figures who produce relational spaces, both distant and near, in a contiguous dynamic between narrating and dwelling. In this multidimensional view of complex relations between different forms of spatiality and temporality, the conjugated concept of spacetime, elaborated by Nancy Munn as an intersubjective social construction, assumes a leading role, linking theoretical and affective problems in the evaluation of space-producing practices. The investigation also counts on the strength of shamanic knowledge as well as on the critical thought of authors such as Walter Benjamin, Michel Foucault, Michel de Certeau e Deleuze e Guattari. It also draws from the inventive power of disturbing literary works form authors such as Yasunari Kawabata, Franz Kafka and Virginia Woolf, exploring the spatial constellation that erupts from the articulation between people, things, places and moments. Giving attention to singular voices and dissonant bodies of knowledge, this dissertation thus offers partial answers which, as a whole, allows for new angles to see multiple - and unusual- possibilities of knowledge production in this thematic field.
