I study the impact of the 2022 expansion of the Bolsa Família program on labor supply. I exploit cross-municipality variation in treatment intensity to implement a differencein-differences research design. The results show that the increase in both the number of beneficiary families and the average transfer amount does not reduce labor supply. Estimated effects are small but positive and robust across alternative specifications, including the inclusion of control variables and a synthetic difference in differences approach. These findings suggest that the general equilibrium demand effects generated by cash transfers to households with high marginal propensities to consume outweigh potential labor supply distortions arising from behavioral responses aimed at program eligibility.
