Resumo:
I conducted a study on the negative role model effects of successful soccer players on Brazilian schools performance, using data from the Brazilian School Census (2000-2015) and soccer player transfer records. Employing a difference-in-differences methodology, I analyzed how the presence of successful local soccer players impacts educational outcomes, such as dropout rates and academic performance in municipalities. The results indicate that the visibility of successful soccer players increases dropout rates by approximately 2.5 percent in nearby schools, particularly among male students, suggesting that the allure of a sports career may divert attention from education, highlighting the need for policies to balance such influences.
