This research addresses the evangelical counsels - poverty, chastity, and
obedience - in light of their theological foundations, historical development, and
contemporary living within the Church. Beginning with their biblical origin and
their presence in the early Christian communities, the study examines their diverse
forms of expression throughout Tradition, including eremitical and monastic life,
mendicant orders, modern renewal movements, and new forms of consecration
officially recognized by the Church, such as Secular Institutes and Societies of
Apostolic Life. The reflection then deepens with the teaching of the Second Vatican
Council, which reaffirms the universality of the call to holiness and highlights the
ecclesial value of these counsels for all the faithful. Finally, the monograph explores
the ecclesial and missionary dimension of living the evangelical counsels in both
religious life and the lay state, emphasizing their role as a prophetic witness in the
contemporary world and as a concrete expression of Christian perfection,
understood as participation in Trinitarian life.
