This study investigates the epidemiological profile and health outcomes of community-acquired pneumonia (CAP) among elderly individuals (aged 60 and older) in Brazil, focusing on the changes that occurred as a consequence of the COVID 19 pandemic. Using data from the Brazilian Unified Health System (SUS), the research analyzes over 1.8 million hospitalizations from 2017 to 2024. The study explores key indicators such as hospitalization rates, in hospital mortality, ICU (Intensive Care Unit) admissions, and healthcare infrastructure through the pandemic, analyzing the pre, during and post-COVID 19. Results show that age and region are significant factors that influence CAP outeomes, intensifying the diagnoses as people get older and also shifting trends due to regional disparities in access to treatment in healtheare units. The pandemic led to temporary disruptions in hospitalization patterns and mortality rates, which later returned to pre pandemic levels. However, the access to ICU s and the availability of ICU beds increased and remained elevated in the post COVID 19 period. These findings emphasize the role of healthcare infrastructure in shaping outcomes for the CAP and the ongoing need to address regional inequalities in Brazil s public health system.
