The media has a significant influence on eating behavior, contributing to the formation of
eating disorders such as anorexia and bulimia. These disorders are a cause for concern in todays society, which is immersed in a culture that worships the perfect and ideal body, which is potentially dangerous and highly influential in this context. This monograph presents a systematic review that seeks to analyze studies that investigate the
role of self-compassion and mindfulness as protective factors against the negative influence of the media on eating disorders, especially anorexia and bulimia. The aim of this study is to explore the effects of self-compassion, which involves adopting a compassionate, kind and accepting attitude towards oneself in order to reduce self criticism and the search for unattainable standards of beauty. In addition, the concept of mindfulness is addressed, which consists of directing attention fully to the present moment, moving away from dysfunctional thoughts related to body image and food.
The methodology includes a search in academic databases and the careful selection of relevant articles focusing on research results that investigate the effectiveness of combining selfcompassion and mindfulness as a complementary treatment resource to cognitive-behavioral therapy. The results of this systematic review provide insights into the possible benefits of selfcompassion and mindfulness in emotional regulation in the face of pressure exerted by socialmedia, which contribute to the maintenance of eating disorders. It is concluded that the incorporation of these therapeutic approaches can help reduce vulnerability to body ideals promoted by the media and strengthen self-acceptance and emotional well-being. This study highlights the importance of considering the combination of self-compassion and mindfulness as a counterpoint to the impact of social media on eating disorders. These complementary approaches can contribute to the promotion of mental health and the effective treatment of individuals affected by anorexia and bulimia. Future research should deepen the understanding of these protective factors and investigate their practical applicability in the clinical context.
