Resumo:
The purpose of this study is to identify if the difficult Sino Japanese strategic relations cause influences on the sociopolitical and economic process of integration of the member countries of ASEAN, Association of Southeast Asian Countries-, and, in case of positive answer, to identify also the main impacts of such influences on the referred integration process. The hypothesis to be verified considers that the strategic relations between China and Japan, which are characterized by complex rivalries, directly influence the process of integration of the ASEAN members, since as a consequence of the exacerbation of such rivalries between the two stronger regional powers, the member states of the Southeast Asia block are stimulated to amplify their political and economic integration in order to react to the possible challenges and ambitions derived from such dispute; to reduce the space for interventions of both powers in the internal affairs of the ASEAN members; to amplify the member states power of bargain and their active voice to mediate eventual crisis evolving the two rival powers; and to try to restrict the free exercise of those stronger powers in the region of interest, throughout the construction of agreements between such powers and the block.
