In the past there was no great concern with people in their work environment, and many worked without motivation because they were not valued, didn t have good working conditions and labor rights guaranteed and suffered punishment. Currently, motivation and its theories in the workplace have come to be seen as an important performance factor for the employee and for the organizations results. This paper aims to understand the concept of motivation and identify, in the light of the various theories, the aspects that influence the employee s motivation in the work environment of a non-profit Higher Education Institution, located in the city of Rio de Janeiro.
