Fossil resources have limited reserves and their use entails environmental damage both locally and globally. Studies aimed at replacing these resources with renewable sources, causing a reduction in pollutant gas emissions, and increasing energy efficiency, are being developed. In this context, the use of ethanol in Otto cycle engines and biodiesel in Diesel cycle engines are already widespread. Studies have been conducted aiming at the use of pentanol in compression ignition engines, forming ternary mixtures of these isomers with diesel and biodiesel (DBP). In this work, comparative studies of ternary diesel and biodiesel mixtures with lower carbon chain alcohols such as methanol, ethanol, propanol and butanol were analyzed. Properties such as boiling point, flash point, vaporization enthalpy, cetane number, density, kinematic viscosity and carbon, hydrogen, oxygen and sulfur contents were studied. For the accomplishment of the ternary diagrams we used the MATLAB Ternary Plots tool. With this tool, it was possible to propose an optimized composition of the mixtures. The results indicated that a mixture composed of 90 percent diesel, 5 percent biodiesel and 5 percent pentanol or any other alcohol presented the best set of properties. Estimates and high estimates regarding economic viability, with emphasis on BPD, provided a value of 41.34/L of this mixture.
