The use of flexible pipes has been growing and spreading all over the world, playing a key role in operating systems and being used in almost all offshore applications today. One of the crucial phases of a flexible pipe design is the definition of a line configuration that guarantees its structural integrity in face of the dynamic loadings of wave and current and the vessel movement to which it will be subjected during its life time. The present work aims to analyze the difference in the system response in deep waters between two typical riser configurations, free hanging catenary and lazy-wave. For this, global analysis were performed for a water depth of 2000 m using finite elements software Orcaflex to account for the nonlinearity present in the problem. Results obtained for top tension and curvature allowed to verify the influence of the type of configuration adopted in these parameters, as well as the influence of the environmental loads of wave and current and the vessel motion in the choice of the most suitable configuration.
