Resumo: | |||||||||||||
The increase in energy demand and its significant dependence on fossil fuels, as well as the growing generation of solid wastes and their inappropriate disposal, are associated with a high number of greenhouse gas emissions, a factor of great environmental imbalance. That being, the treatment of residues through anaerobic digestion appears as an alternative to both issues, due to its main product, biogas, which has high energy potential. Therefore, the aim of this work, based on data collection in the literature, is to obtain correlations between the most important parameters of the process, and to estimate the amount of biogas and organic matter needed to supply the electricity demand of the Environmental Education Station of PUC-Rio. The processes studied indicate an average working temperature of 37 Celsius degrees, implying a mesophilic character, with mean values for pH and reactor volume of 6.9 and 9.5 L, respectively. It has also been found that the higher methane (CH4)
productions come from single-phase continuous processes with substrates from codigestion and that the average biogas and CH4 production values are 0.509 and 0.343 m3 / kg.VS, with an average content of CH4 in the biogas of 62.17 percent. Based on the collected data and their averages, the raised demand for electric energy and the selection of a scenario in which a diesel engine operates in dual fuel mode, with partial replacement of a biogas with 85 percent CH4, the need for a biogas volume of 414 m3/month and 39,4 kg TS/day of organic matter feed to the digester was estimated. Therefore, considering the daily food waste production in the university, it would be possible to meet 38,6 percent of electrical energy demand.
