Family businesses are extremely important for all economies around the world. In attempt to prove the need for high professionalization of management and governance models, the absorption of aspects such as the succession process, for example, becomes important. Passing the baton is a task that requires planning, because if conducted in a superficial manner, it can end up compromising the company s survival. Thus, understanding how the succession process occurs in family businesses turns out being fundamental to determine the main challenges to be faced by future generations. In this regard, this study seeks to identify factors that aid and hinder succession processes, to assist professionals on this matter.
