This work aims at investigating the relation between credit knowledge and the use of credit cards. A survey, based on three categories of analysis - use of credit cards, debt situation and credit knowlege-, was carried out with adults and young adults in Rio de Janeiro. Dispite claiming to be well-acquainted with the basic financial elements, many have been unable to apply them to practical matters. This shows a gap between the self-evaluation of the subjects and the evaluation resulting from the research, which can lead to poorly-based debt decisions and worse use of the benefits that the credit card offers. The result of this exploratory study provides input about the credit instrument most used in Brazil.
