The drag reduction in a turbulent flow is a theme of great interest for several engineering fields, since the term drag reduction in it s essence means, basically, to reduce the undesired energy losses. Due to the economical irrelevance of the issue, several methodologies have been studied. Among the various solutions suggested in the literature, the use of low concentrations of certain polymers as solute in order to reduce the drag in a turbulent flow is one of the most discussed recently. After realizing that this method could be, in fact, considerably efficient for that purpose, several authors have been trying to clarify the physical phenomena that cause the drag reduction. An inconvenient on using this technic is that the polymer loses efficiency and suffers degradation whenever it passes through hydraulic pumps, valves, restrictions and other devices. On the literature, there is still no consensus about how this degradation occurs and at what rate. Having that in mind, this project tries to build and test an experimental apparatus to study the degradation of polymers in turbulent flow inside pipes. The suggested apparatus enables the flowing of the fluid without passing through any kind of pumping system. Several tests have been run to measure the drag reduction with the apparatus and the results are shown throughout this paper. These results suggest that the polymer degradation reaches a saturation point throughout the time.
