Resumo: | |||||||||||||
The transport systems are of utmost importance for the development of a society. These devices are able to transport various materials, food and people for any place on planet Earth, even the most picturesque and dangerous places that have never before been thought to be able to achieve.
The lift, a branch of these systems, is used in areas where large spans of land must be crossed without the need to traverse the entire length of the valley to be transposed. These devices feature simple construction and operation. Basically, the set consists of wire cables that are stretched from one end to the other of a valley - which are responsible for the support and traction of carriers; gondolas, main elements of the whole set, since all the load is allocated inside of it; towers which support the cables and counter weights to keep the tension of the cables, necessary for the proper operation of the equipment, and last but not least, the motors responsible for moving the containers on the wire ropes.
Due to the complexity of developing all components involving the operation of a cable car, this paper focuses exclusively on the sizing of wire ropes responsible for supporting and moving the arrangement. In the following pages of this manuscript, it will be explained how the sizing calculations are performed, taking into account the distance and elevation of the points which need to connected, weight and frequency in which material (or people) need to be hauled from an end to the other end, in addition, it is considered factors such as wind, ice and thermal expansion, important elements if neglected, may ruin the whole project.
Finally, once completed all theoretical presentation, the entire study was set out to test. Using data from a system already in operation in France, calculations were carried out with the minimum design information to verify that the diameters of the cables and their deflections are equivalent and what are the variations presented by the mathematical models developed in this paper.
