Resumo: | |||||||||||||
Technology has allowed the compression of tens of thousands of dollars of music production hardware into reasonably priced software bundles. These contain at times hundreds of virtualized instruments and effects that need little more to execute than a pair of speakers, a screen, and an average computer. This democratization of musical technology has allowed gravitation in music production to shift from huge expensive recording/producing studios to the garage studios of independent artists. In this relatively new universe of virtual instruments, MIDI controllers help bring back the fluidity of human touch to digital music production. The objective of this project is to design a low cost, low power, USB-driven MIDI controller to allow for tactile control of virtual parameters in Digital Audio Workstations. The project, built on the ARM Cortex-M4 based Tiva C MCU, encompasses eight 128 pulse per revolution Bourns encoders to allow for comfortable, no detent, control. These encoders, suited with full size shafts, are multiplexed through firmware to allow the control of up to 40 control changes spanning over five parameter banks. Each encoder is encircled by 16 LED rings to provide a coarse visual feedback of the current value of the parameter in use. Two buttons allow for effortless switching between the control banks and dedicated LEDs provide visual representation of the selected bank. Other buttons are pre-mapped to specific transport control messages, allowing play/pause, record, stop, fast forward, and reverse functionalities.
All components were selected with the consumer in mind, considering factors such as price and quality to ensure a final product that feels and acts professional but still fits into most individuals’ budgets.
