The alcohol industry is becoming highly prominent in the current Brazilian energy
scenario. As a consequence of its rapid growth, the amount of waste produced in the
distillation of ethanol also increases. This waste is called vinasse. For each liter of
alcohol produced, 13 liters of vinasse are generated. There is a variety of known
technologies that can be applied to the treatment of this effluent. The present work aims
to introduce an industrial scale plant for treating vinasse, using only Membrane
Separation Processes (MSP). The plant in this study presents three subunits:
Submerged Microfiltration, Membrane Bioreactor and Reverse Osmosis. This plant is
capable of producing industrial reusable water and a concentrate that can be used as
fertilizer on the sugar cane plantation itself, this way improving land productivity. The flow
chart of the project will display the calculations used to design the main equipment and
piping of the plant and also the control loops that are relevant to the process.
