Resumo: | |||||||||||||
The history of Levittown, a suburb in the region of Long Island, near New York City, is intertwined with the history of the America Golden Years. Designed and built by the Levitt family, Levittown revolutionized postwar construction, putting into practice the concept of mass production for prefabricated houses. Sales success thanks to a cutting-edge technology combined with low costs, Levittown became the home of the white middle class, affluent, chief representative of the American dream and reverberated by the other suburbs in the country, the community model created there. However, the 50s, marked by the struggle between Americans and Russians for political hegemony and military, was also the scene of Cold War and threats of nuclear attacks. In this context, what we saw in Levittown and in consequence, the other white, middle-class suburbs that have mushroomed, was a desperate search for security and stability in supported triad family, religion and consumption. From socializing spaces created by their own citizens, was born a new culture of suburbia harshly criticized for its conformity and homogeneity.
