The study addresses the perceptions of slum dwellers from Rio das Pedras, located in the west of Rio de Janeiro, on the provision of public services in the region. The services evaluated are safety, transportation, education and public health. Emphasis was placed on the perception of public safety, 151 questionnaires were used solely for closed-ended questions in two public schools in the region. The data were analyzed using the Excel software package Microsoft Office.
