Resumo:
The research aimed at identifying strategies used by environmental NGOs to raise their financial resources. The selected sample contained six environmental NGOs with their headquarters in the State of Rio de Janeiro. The study was based on field and literature research. NGOs’ managers answered an open questionnaire about their fundraising practices, main existing drivers, barriers and their accountability process. The main research results show that the sample`s fundraising main strategies contemplate project creation to be offered to potential financiers; use of NGOs` employees and volunteers to contact potencial financiers, personal contact or Marketing actions. The main drivers identified in the sample were previous well succeeded projects, know-how, and NGO`s well defined mission. The main barriers are usually lack of interest by companies and society for their cause, bureaucracy, lack of fiscal incentives and incompatibility with potential sponsors` objectives. NGOs` accountability is presented through annual activity and financial reports. The sampled NGOs reported that a mutual trust has been achieved between them and their sponsoring companies as a result of past successful projects.
