Resumo: | |||||||||||||
This paper consists on the analysis of the image´s function to Jesuit
preachers, in which rhetoric orients the relation between vision, memory,
meditation and devote action. In particular, this analysis refers to Jerônimo
Nadal´s book Adnotationes et Meditationes in Evangelia, published in 1595, in
Antwerp. It is based on biblical narratives that described the salvation of mankind
and it has illustrations of particularly scenes of the life of Jesus Christ. Each image
has a series of letters with a respective annotation that identified characters and
historical places. Besides, it also orients the narrative process that the spectator
must keep. This book of meditation was a suggestion of Ignacio de Loyola; his
proposal consisted in an extension, to the liturgical year, of the praying method
that he developed in the Spiritual Exercises. I intend to demonstrate that this book
represented Nadal’s aspiration to conciliate active and contemplative life trough
rhetoric images, which were analog to his epigram spiritu, corde et practice, that
try to synthesize the Jesuit way.
