This research addresses the issue of attributes modern
hand computers (PDA´s) and how they relate to needs of low
income students at PUC-Rio. It examines how PDAs
can be used to reduce the problem of digital exclusion. It
follows recent propositions to make global corporations
more tuned with the bottom of the income pyramid in world
markets and how they can use their know-how to alleviate
poverty in the world poor countries.
By way of personal interviews with members of the low
income students at PUC-Rio and with members of school
administration responsible for assisting them in their
personal needs, this research was able to raise several
questions about digital exclusion and personal problems
that PDAs could help them in their academic life.
The research findings points to a great potential for the
PDAs as a devise to help them cope with specific problems
such as cost of books and photocopying and extended
time spent on public transportation, among others.
