The objective of this paper is to criticize sadness and
mourning being
placed in the scope of pathology. Using a historical
approach we demonstrate how
melancholy was dealt with until the appearance and greater
publicity of
depression. In a second moment, we present the first
impressions of
psychoanalysis brought to us by Abraham and Freud about
the theme. Next,
aiming to delimit the field of psychoanalysis regarding
the theme, in
contemporaneity we bring the contributions of Winnicott,
Lambotte and Fédida
discussing the etiology and the mechanisms of melancholy
and depression.
