Resumo:
This research presents the translation of the literary triptych Mimnermos: The Brainsex Paintings (Translation, Essay, Interview) (1995) by Canadian writer, essayst, and translator Anne Carson (1950-). This thesis splits into two sections. In the first one, I introduce Carson s translational thought and praxis and focus on its challenges and its complexities. Given that translation is an activity that is sprinkled across her body of work, in her renderings of classical literature, I present a reading experience that dedicates special attention to what she terms catastrophe and eros, cultivating a relational interlocution with what is presented as an act of translation. I defend the hypothesis that Mimnermos: The Brainsex Paintings is a translation in full and it instantiates Carson s erotic creation. After this debate, I introduce my translation in the second section, with commentary and notes regarding its specificities. The analysis of this work is illuminated by a careful study of its formal aspects - of the translation of the elegiac couplet, the essay, the interviews. For that, a dialogue with Paulo Henriques Britto s methodology of poetic translation and with some key concepts from the shamanic poetics of translation as presented by Álvaro Faleiros is in order, to bring attention to my translation strategies. With that in mind, I seek to keep the spark burning in Carson s readership in the name of a creative, urgent, and radical response in the face of what resists translation.
