Resumo: | |||||||||||||
The thesis aims to analyze the updating of gender, generation, race and class asymmetries in the context of the covid-19 pandemic in the city of Rio de Janeiro, and their influence on the care of elderly people, within the family. It is assumed that these families are situated between the function of protection, in a context of precarious public policies and social protection, and being blamed if care is considered inadequate or insufficient. In this context, we seek to understand experiences and care strategies of elderly people during the pandemic period and meanings attributed to them by family caregivers. The study recognizes that in Brazil care is socially organized based on the intersection of oppressions of gender, generation, social class and race. Understanding that, according to the position that agents occupy in the social universe, the challenges, demands, experiences, conceptions and resources of each family caregiver during the pandemic are different. To this end, it starts from the field of social sciences and Social Work, and the study is part of the theoretical framework of intersectionality. The work is based on the theoretical perspective developed by Pierre Bourdieu, based on the concepts of habitus, field, cultural capital and social class. This is research with a qualitative approach, whose main instrument for data production consists of semi-structured interviews, carried out in January 2025, with five users of CRAS Márcio Brotto, family caregivers of elderly people and residents of the city of Rio de Janeiro. The hermeneutic-dialectic perspective presides over the process of analyzing empirical data, through the method of interpretation of meanings, allowing us to conclude that, due to objective conditions of life and subjective conditioning of existence, during the covid-19 pandemic, family caregivers suffered major social effects and problems in their physical and, above all, mental health. Furthermore, the results point to the relevance of social protection services aimed at elderly people and caregivers, indicating the urgency of strengthening and expanding public care policies.
