Resumo: | |||||||||||||
As the demand for raw materials increases and the ore content decreases, it
generates a need to process ores with a higher degree of complexity and lower
content of the mineral of interest. From this perspective, biosurfactants have been
gaining prominence because they have similar activity to synthetic surfactants
with the added benefit of lower toxicity. In addition to that, mixing different
reagents may generate greater selectivity when compared to using a single
collector. Also a smaller amount of surfactant may be needed to achieve the
same recovery, thus reducing production cost and environmental pollution. The
use of biosurfactant mixtures has not yet been considered for this purpose. The
main objective of this research is to evaluate the mixture of biosurfactants
extracted from the bacteria Rhodococcus opacus and Rhodococcus erythropolis
as collectors of hematite in the direct flotation of iron ore tailings. Thus, it is
expected that the mixture of biosurfactants to be more selective and recover more
iron than in their individual use. Characterization studies of iron ore were carried
out: elemental analysis and evaluation of the interaction between biosurfactant
and mineral. Flotation tests will be carried out varying the concentration (1000 -
3000 g/t) and proportions of biosurfactants (100 - 0 per cent). The isoelectric point of
hematite was around pH 5.3, while the PIE of quartz is below pH 2.0. The
hematite/biosurfactant interaction shifted the PIE to around pH 3.5. As for the
quartz/biosurfactant interaction, it was not possible to observe a change in the
PIE. The FTIR spectra demonstrate the adsorption of the biosurfactant on the
mineral surface, which is of an electrostatic nature. The adsorbed biosurfactant
increased the hematite contact angle from 40 degrees to between 60 degrees and 70 degrees. The
flotation tests reached an iron content of 48.8 per cent and a recovery of 70 per cent.
