Resumo:
This paper aims to reflect on the role of Heritage Education as an essential tool for the valorization and preservation of cultural heritage, encompassing both historical buildings and contemporary artistic expressions, such as graffiti. The research proposes a dialogue between tradition and modernity, which is crucial for the formation of citizens aware of their cultural identity and their role in preserving heritage. Heritage Education raises awareness about the importance of cultural heritage, promoting activities that encourage the recognition and preservation of both material and immaterial cultural assets. In the school context, this approach integrates with the curriculum, primarily in the History subject, according to the SEEDUC/RJ (2022) Reference Curriculum, strengthening students connection with their cultural heritage and promoting respect for diversity. Graffiti, often associated with marginalization, is redefined as a legitimate form of art that addresses relevant social and political issues, serving as a visual communication tool that transforms urban space. In a constantly changing world, it is essential that heritage preservation adapts to new social and urban realities. The integration of Heritage Education, heritage, and graffiti contributes to innovative learning that values both traditions and contemporary expressions. However, challenges such as inadequate teacher training, deficiencies in teaching methodologies, and students lack of interest in cultural heritage still need to be overcome. It is believed that methodologies such as Heritage Education and Project-Based Learning (PBL) can foster a critical stance in students, helping to form conscious and active citizens in cultural preservation.
