Resumo:
Donald Symons, in 1987, first employed the construct of mate value to explain selective mating among humans. Since then, various researchers have proposed new theoretical and operational definitions. Recently, it has been identified that these definitions cluster into four theoretical-methodological approaches: holistic, general dimensional, dimensional, and by proxy. Despite their differences, all draw from evolutionary and social exchange literature to conceptualize mate value as the assessment of characteristics signaling reproductive value. Among these approaches, the dimensional approach has been the most widely used in research. Within dimensional instruments, the Mate Value Inventory (MVI-7) stands out for its comprehensiveness, simplicity, and predictive power. It has been adapted for use in over eight countries and remains in use today. However, the Relational Mate Value Scale (RMVS), another dimensional measure, introduced a novel perspective on mate value. This instrument derived its items from literature on romantic relationships and social perception. It assesses relational value by measuring the extent to a partner can uniquely provide a high-quality relationship. Nevertheless, no adaptation studies with validity evidence for these scales have been identified within the Brazilian context. This dissertation, presented in article format, comprises two studies aimed at adapting the MVI-7 and RMVS to the national context, providing validity evidence and reliability indicators. The results revealed that both instruments exhibit a unifactorial structure and expected relationships with other variables, alongside high intercorrelation and good precision.
