Resumo:
TikTok is one of the most popular social media platforms in Brazil, widely used by different age groups for entertainment and information consumption. Considering this dynamic in the Brazilian digital landscape, this study investigates how content creators with a background in biological sciences use TikTok to teach scientific concepts, exploring the strategies they adopt to balance education and engagement on the platform while accounting for the network’s format limitations in terms of content depth. To achieve this, videos from three major Brazilian creators, Yago Stephano, Ana, and Matheus Mesquita, were analyzed, along with an interview with Yago Stephano, aiming to understand his perspective on the challenges and potential of TikTok as a teaching tool. The results indicate that content varies among creators, ranging from explanations of viral videos to microscope observations, and that the use of humor and pop culture references are central strategies for increasing audience engagement. However, the need to adapt content to the platforms algorithmic demands may lead to superficiality and a limitation in the variety of topics covered. The study concludes that, despite these challenges, TikTok proves to be a relevant tool for scientific communication, making complex concepts more accessible to a broad audience.
