Resumo:
This research analyzes transcripts of interviews with 17 women about howthey deal with their own breasts in the constitution of their self-image and socialidentities, using Discourse Analysis techniques. Theories of anthropology of thebody and gender helped to understand how culture marks its bodies. In culturalterms, breasts imply complex meanings, such as sexuality, breastfeeding, illness(breast cancer), among others, and the body, particularly the female body, is aninstrument of power, control and social coercion. Data analyzed allowed thestipulation of three categories: a. Men generally look with greed: breasts, family, health and society; b. I have never loved my boobs: female body and itsdiscontents; and c. I loved watching Dr. Hollywood: media and bodilyimperialism.
