Resumo:
This dissertation aimed to understand how professionals working in large companies and who are single mothers experience work-family conflict. The choice of this theme was made in light of the perception that the experiences of these women are different from those living with partners but have been little studied. It is a qualitative research, grounded in the interpretation and understanding of the phenomena studied. Interviews were conducted with ten single mothers with children up to 12 years old who work in multinational companies, and the method of analysis employed was thematic analysis. The results indicated that the conflict resulting from the workload associated with intense caregiving activities can negatively impact the health of single mothers, with some interviewees reporting the use of medication, as well as therapy and physical activity, to deal with these effects. Additionally, the support network was mentioned as an important resource to alleviate work-family conflict; however, this is not a reality for all single mothers, as its use depends on available resources, both human and financial. Coping strategies for work-family conflict included remote or hybrid work arrangements as an important option to minimize it, as well as the use of family or professional support networks. The interviewees also suggested actions to be implemented by companies to contribute to mitigating work-family conflict.
