Through the mythological system proposed by Roland Barthes in
Mythologies, we seek to carry out an analysis of anti-abortion discourses
published on the Gazeta do Povo portal between 2018 and 2022. Through this
analysis, we expect to read certain myths of maternity present in Brazil that not
only are (re)produced in anti-abortion discourses, but also naturalizes, legitimizes
and perpetuates them. The time frame is vital for us to contextualize the topic
discussed within a broader scenario of conservatism and neoliberalism, both in its
political presence and in its reach in society as a whole. Furthermore, as a
secondary goal we aim to think particularly about the role of image production
and the agency of design in these mythical operations, which also act in the
production of relations of power and subjectivity in contemporary Brazil.
