Resumo: | |||||||||||||
In this thesis, the object of study is the imagery representations of old age, a diverse category, socially constructed and adapted to meet the interests of organization, management and maintenance of powers. Due to its breadth, a gender approach is made, with an emphasis on male old age and its representation in the Brazilian audiovisual. The objective was to analyze how contemporary communicational processes deepen meanings that promote the maintenance of a masculinized management of society, and how this is configured in old age. For that, two trajectories of recognized actors with works in cinema and television were chosen: Antônio Pitanga and Antônio Fagundes. It starts from the assumption that particular experiences, professional events and performances that make up the trajectory of the two Antônios allow understandings about the maintenance or reconfiguration of the elderly man s ways of legibility in social life. The theoretical-analytical perspective that guided the work paths bets on the intertwining of the perspective of Stuart Hall for representational regimes with the sociology of Norbert Elias and the social historiography construction of Philippe Ariès. Other theoretical perspectives based the analysis, including: Didi-Huberman and the tyranny of the visible, Erving Goffman and the representation of the self, the biographical illusion proposed by Pierre Bourdieu, devices of Foucault and the art of storytelling by Walter Benjamin, among others. The methodological path was composed of three axes: 1) the proposal to understand the term old age in its breadth, in different registers of times and societies before the theoretical construction is deepened; 2) Gilberto Velho s method of ethnographic view, in thinking about issues related to complex societies both through literature and in individual trajectories; and 3) devices of control and social organization in maintaining a status quo that prioritizes certain groups over others, by Foucault. The proposal came from the intersection of traces that help in the search for an imagery narrative through the ages. Having the image as a support, the examples presented reinforce the importance of representation in the perpetuation of social values. In addition, the analysis explored concepts that elucidate gender and color identity discussions. The research allowed to reach the understanding that the meanings of male aging are engendered in the current neoliberal model, in the face of the appreciation of super productivity. It is possible to say that, with the advent of audiovisual language, the promotion of representations that forge processes of discarding so-called unproductive bodies in the silent generational clash was exacerbated throughout the 20th century and the beginning of the 21st. Finally, paths were pointed out, in the light of Cultural Studies, for new artistic productions that include invisible social actors – the elderly. The study on the construction of old age and its representation in the audiovisual is relevant to think about contemporaneity, in which there is an increase in the number of elderly people and a decrease in the age pyramid of the proportion of young people. This thesis intends to contribute to the reflection on the place of old age, aiming at new models of aging configuration.
