The need for lighter and slender structures has led civil engineers to look for
alternative materials, which has led, in recent decades, to cementitious composites
reinforced with fabrics. This new type of material is known as textile reinforced
concrete (TRC) or Fabric Reinforced Cement Mortar (FRCM). In addition to the
lightness and slimness, it is worth mentioning the high ductility of the material.
Nevertheless, there are still only a few studies on durability and mechanical
mechanisms when it occurs in situations with high environmental aggressiveness,
such as coastal areas. Therefore, the objective of this study is to analyze the
influence of saline environments on cementitious composites reinforced with
natural sisal and alkali resistant glass fabrics. Two types of matrices were
developed: one with a high calcium hydroxide content, only with Portland cement
and the other with a lower content, due to the partial replacement of Portland cement
by Metacaulim and fly ash. The TRC specimens were placed for accelerated aging
in a salt steam walk-in chamber with a concentration of 3.5 percent NaCl and 70 degree Celsius . After
1000 hours of aging, the specimens were removed from the chamber and subjected
to direct tensile tests. The degradation mechanisms were discussed and a
comparison between the mechanical behavior of the two composite systems were
addressed.
