The main object of this article is to analyze strategies developed by the Sankofa Memória e História da Rocinha Museum in the construction, preservation and visibility of the resident s memory about the favela through photographs and audiovisual resources shown at project s webpage. For this, the research was divided into three parts. The first one is to contextualize Rocinha in Rio de Janeiro city and to understand how the working-class neighborhood located at Gávea suburbs in the beginning of 20th century, became the biggest favela in Brazil, starting to suffer the stereotypes related to these territories. In the second part is where it is shows the favela resident s actions who decided to tell their own story, through memories, to reassure the presence in the city. In this way they seek, in Walter Benjamin words, to brush history against the grain. Finally, It was analyzed the project Memória Rocinha s website, developed by a partnership between the museum and Moreira Salles Institute. Using Marc Ferrez, Augusto Malta and other photographers, the website shows the landscape transformation between 1885 and 2015 where Rocinha is located. It also brings interviews from Rocinha residents and near neighborhoods about the impact of favela expansion and disputes over its permanence.
